The first signs of facial aging are frequently localized to the upper face and eyes. Premature aging around the eyes – such as dark circles, sagging eyelids, fine lines and wrinkles – can make you appear tired and older. An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves removal of excess eyelid skin and sculpting excessive fat pockets. Because of the thinness of the upper lid, the possibility of keloid or excessive scarring is almost non-existent. As a result, upper lid blepharoplasty can be performed safely in people with darker pigmented skin without significant risk of scarring. Special consideration is necessary when performing lower eyelid surgery in patients with darker skin tones. I prefer an approach where the incision is hidden inside the eyelid avoiding the risk of any visible scarring. Most patients are back to their normal routine within days, although complete recovery may take a few weeks. Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort are a part of the recovery process, and usually can be alleviated with cold compresses and appropriate medication.
